Deep Background

Excavating the Real History of the Russian Revolution

Understanding the real history of the 1917 Russian Revolution and the reasons for its political degeneration is an absolute must--it was the key event of the Twentieth Century. Getting at the truth is a bit like carrying out archeaological excavation since this event has been buried under a mountain of fairy tales written by Western and Stalinist falsifiers of history. Without a proper understanding of this event, it is impossible to make sense of subsequent political events in the period since 1917. For example, Italian and German fascism were direct reactions to the international impact of the Russian Revolution. And understanding the degeneration of the Russian Revolution under Stalin is the key to an accurate appreciation of the reasons for the victory of Hitler and the origins of World War 2. The following books are important for such an understanding:

1. Tania Ross (Ed.): Dispatches from the Revolution: Russia 1916-18 (1997). A collection of the articles by Morgan Philips Price who was the Russian speaking foreign correspondent of the Manchester Guardian in Russia before, during and after the 1917 Revolution. This is an especially important book for present day liberals who view the revolution negatively. The articles, which were published in the Manchester Guardian, were written by an upper class English liberal. The views expressed in these articles evolved from an initial scepticism about the Bolsheviks to a position of full support as he witnessed the revolutionary events personally. Some of his later Guardinan articles were not published because of censorship by the British authorities. The editor of this book is the grandaughter of Philips Price who has also written other works about the history of censorship in the British press. Essential reading.

2. Alexander Rabinowitch: The Bolsheviks Come to Power (1976). Rabinowitch is a Russian speaking academic at Indiana University. The significant feature of this book is that he makes exstensive use of primary sources to document the history of the 1917 Russian Revolution and the soviets (workers councils) and comes to the conclusion that the Bolshevik Party was a democratic institution during this phase of its existence ( although it later degenerated under Stalin). It is a very illuminating and readable account. Rabinowitch has also just published a follow up to this: The Bolsheviks in Power (2007)--covering the 1st year of the Bolsehvik government--which draws heavily on newly available primary sources in the Soviet era archives opened up during the 1990s. These contain the stenographic records of the Boshevik party and soviets.

3. John Reed: Ten Days that Shook the World (1918). This tells the story of the Russian revolution from a unique, first hand perspective. Reed, an American journalist, was on assignment in Russia for The Masses--then the principal radical journal in the United States--and spent his days walking the streets, reading and collecting handbills, newspapers, and posters, and talking to people. As a result, Ten Days crackles with energetic immediacy. At its best moments it reads like a novel. Like Philips Price, he became a supporter of the Bolsheviks.

4. E. H. Carr's 8 volume History of Soviet Russia is a monumental, extensively documented account of the Russian Revolution and its aftermath. Although Carr himself accepted that he was a typical English empiricist who see history as "one damn thing after another", it is full of useful information.

5. Isaac Deutscher's trilogy: The Prophet Armed, The Prophet Unarmed and The Prophet Outcast is a comprehensive biography of the central figure in the 1917 Russian Revolution, Lev Davidovitch Bronstein, better known as Leon Trotsky. Trotsky was the person who actually organised and led the revolution (and the Red Army during the subsequent Civil War) while Lenin was in hiding in Finland. Written in a majestic style, it is interesting and useful despite the fact that some of the author's spin on events and on Trotsky's judgement is one sided and muddled in places.

6. Trotsky's own 3 volume History of the Russian Revolution is available online here.

Note: The fact that scholars and independent investigators in the US and Britain are probing the evidence relating to 9/11 and 7/7 is a good thing. The fact that people are asking serious questions about the "official conspiracy theories" offered by their respective governments is further proof of the validity of the old saying: "you can't fool all of the people all of the time." Those who dismiss these endeavours, or who refuse to examine the holes in the official narrative, need to think again. The real "conspiracy nuts" are Bush, Blair and the Zionists--not those, like Annie Machon, who are searching for the truth. Here are some video clips on the subject.
